Then she reached slowly toward the center console through the open driver's door.

The officer moved instantly.

“Hands where I can see them.”

She stopped.

“My phone is on the seat.”

“Leave it.”

“I want to record.”

“You don't need to record.”

“That isn't your decision.”

She reached again.

The officer slapped her hand downward.

The sound was sharp enough that the man at the pickup whispered something under his breath.

Her phone slipped from her fingers.

Hit the running board.

Then the concrete.

The screen did not break.

For half a second, the entire station became perfectly still.

The Black woman looked at her hand.

Then at the officer.

His own expression suggested he had not expected the contact to sound so loud.

She straightened.

“Do not touch me again.”

The officer moved closer.

“Then follow instructions.”

“You just struck my hand.”

“I redirected you.”

“No.”

The distinction irritated him.

“I told you to keep your hands visible.”

“They were visible.”

“You reached into the vehicle.”

“For the phone I told you I was reaching for.”

“Turn around.”

The younger officer finally stepped forward.

“Maybe we should—”

The first officer raised one hand without looking at him.

“I've got it.”

The Black woman looked toward the younger officer.

He stopped.

That would bother him for years.

Not because he did nothing.

Because he almost did something.

There was a difference.

The woman looked back at the first officer.

“Am I under arrest?”

“Turn around.”

“For what?”

“Failure to obey.”

“A lawful order?”

His face reddened.

“I am done warning you.”

He reached for her wrist.

She moved back one step.

Not quickly.

Not threateningly.

Instinct.

Years of training had taught her how bodies reacted before thoughts caught up.

His fingers closed around her forearm.

She immediately relaxed the arm rather than pull against him.

“Take your hand off me.”

“Turn around.”

“Officer.”

“Turn around.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“I am not resisting you.”

“Then stop pulling.”

“I am not pulling.”

He twisted her wrist behind her.
