His face drained.

He had just read the vehicle information.

Federal government executive-use registration.

Authorized driver confirmed.

Identity restricted.

He swallowed.

“Sergeant.”

The senior officer did not answer.

“Sergeant.”

“What?”

“The plate cleared.”

The general spoke first.

“Of course it did.”

The officer stepped back.

His hand finally left her wrist.

The open handcuff hung from his fingers.

“I didn't know who you were.”

The general slowly turned around.

One wrist showed red finger marks.

Her phone remained on the pavement.

The handbag's contents were scattered near the pump.

She looked at him.

“I know.”

The officer swallowed.

“We received a suspicious-person call.”

The general glanced toward the station.

“From whom?”

The cashier inside immediately looked down.

The officer hesitated.

“We're investigating.”

The colonel took one step.

The general raised two fingers.

He stopped.

She looked at the police officer.

“You said the description was a Black female near a dark SUV.”

The officer said nothing.

“Is that still your account?”

He glanced toward the colonel.

Wrong decision.

The general noticed.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“I asked you a question.”

“Yes.”

“That was the description.”

“Yes.”

“Did dispatch provide any additional identifying information?”

“I'd have to check.”

“You didn't check before putting hands on me?”

“I had reasonable suspicion.”

“Based on?”

“You matched.”

“Black.”

The officer's face reddened.

“And female.”

“Near a vehicle.”

“My vehicle.”

“I didn't know that.”

“You didn't ask before ordering me away from it.”

“I did ask.”

“You asked after giving the order.”

He said nothing.

The general looked toward the younger officer.

“Your body camera recording?”

He touched his chest.

“Yes, ma'am.”

“Since arrival?”

“Yes.”

The senior officer's expression changed.

The general looked at his camera.

“Yours?”

His hand moved toward his own chest.

The indicator was dark.

Nobody spoke.

He activated it.

The general smiled without humor.

“Now it is.”

The colonel exhaled slowly through his nose.

The general heard.

“Colonel.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

“Call local supervision.”

He nodded.

The police officer stepped forward.

“General, we can handle—”
