Three black SUVs.

Uniformed federal personnel.

One elegantly dressed Black woman standing near pump six.

His sergeant near the cruiser.

The younger officer looking sick.

The lieutenant approached.

“Good afternoon.”

The general nodded.

“Lieutenant.”

He stopped.

“You know my rank?”

“I saw the bars.”

He almost smiled.

Not the time.

He looked toward his sergeant.

“What happened?”

The sergeant answered:

“Suspicious-person call.”

The lieutenant looked toward the general.

Then the SUV.

“Call regarding her?”

“Yes.”

“What suspicious behavior?”

The sergeant hesitated.

The general did not help.

The lieutenant waited.

The younger officer looked toward his supervisor.

The sergeant said:

“Caller said someone was tampering with a vehicle.”

The general's eyes narrowed.

That was new.

She spoke.

“You told me the call was a suspicious Black female near a dark SUV.”

The lieutenant turned slowly toward the sergeant.

“Is that what dispatch said?”

The sergeant's jaw moved.

“I paraphrased.”

The younger officer looked away.

The lieutenant noticed.

“What exactly did dispatch say?”

Nobody answered immediately.

The lieutenant touched his radio.

“Communications, send original call notes to my terminal.”

Static.

Confirmation.

The general said:

“And the audio.”

The lieutenant looked at her.

“We'll preserve it.”

“Thank you.”

He looked toward her wrist.

“Were you cuffed?”

“No.”

“Attempted?”

“Yes.”

“Force?”

“He slapped my hand down when I reached for my phone.”

The lieutenant turned to the younger officer.

“You saw that?”

The younger man swallowed.

“Yes, sir.”

The sergeant looked at him.

Betrayal flashed across his face.

The lieutenant saw that too.

“And the shove?”

The general said:

“He pushed me against the vehicle.”

The younger officer closed his eyes briefly.

The lieutenant asked:

“You saw that too?”

“Yes, sir.”

The sergeant stepped forward.

“She was noncompliant.”

The lieutenant looked at him.

“Stop talking.”

The sergeant froze.

Same phrase.

Different authority.

The general noticed the irony.

The lieutenant continued.

“Your camera?”

The sergeant touched it.

“Activated now.”

“Why now?”

“I missed activation.”

The lieutenant stared for several seconds.
