The senior officer pulled one cuff free.
“Hand behind your back.”
“It already is.”
“Other hand.”
She gave it to him.
No struggle.
No argument.
He opened the cuff.
And then three black SUVs entered the station.
They came fast but controlled.
One from the main entrance.
Two behind it.
No sirens.
No flashing lights.
Just coordinated movement.
The lead SUV swept past pump two and stopped sharply behind the police cruiser.
The second angled across the exit lane.
The third stopped near pump eight.
Every head at the gas station turned.
The police officer paused with the open handcuff inches from the woman's wrist.
The younger officer looked up from the patrol car computer.
Doors opened.
Men and women stepped out.
Not casually.
Purposefully.
Several wore civilian outer garments over military uniforms.
Others were fully uniformed.
The lead man was in his fifties, broad-shouldered, close-cropped hair visible beneath his service cap as he emerged.
A colonel.
He saw the woman against the SUV.
Stopped.
For a moment his face registered pure disbelief.
Then training took over.
He walked rapidly toward her.
The police officer shifted.
“Stay back.”
The colonel did not even look at him.
He stopped several paces away.
Straightened.
Snapped to attention.
And saluted.
“General.”
The gas station became silent.
Even traffic seemed distant.
The police officer's grip loosened.
The colonel held the salute.
“Your command convoy is ready.”
The general looked toward him.
Then at the handcuff hanging open from the officer's hand.
Then back.
“Stand easy.”
The colonel lowered his arm.
His eyes moved toward the officer's hand gripping her wrist.
Something dangerous entered his expression.
The general saw it immediately.
“Colonel.”
He looked at her.
“Ma'am.”
“Do nothing.”
His jaw tightened.
“Yes, ma'am.”
The police officer stared.
General.
Not a word used casually.
Not in that tone.
Not accompanied by that salute.
The younger officer had left the patrol car now.
He looked from the arriving personnel to the woman.
Then back at the registration result on the computer screen.
